Friday Favorites- 5/11

Good morning and happy Friday! Thank goodness! Not only is it Friday, but it’s also supposed to be a gorgeous day out. I am planning to spend the day biking to the numerous parks we have in our town. Should be a good day!

Mother’s Day Card

This weekend I had the pleasure of spending the day with my Mom. It was great. My hubby was gone, so us girls treated ourselves to a little early Mother’s Day shopping. Nothing grand, (as we spent more time at Toys R Us than the actual mall) but it was a lot of fun to hang out together!
In addition to shopping, I had a few gifts for my Mom. Some gourmet chocolate and an Amazon Kindle gift card went perfectly with this adorable homemade card. She of course, loved it!
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, I thought I’d share how I made it. I started with two pieces of Micah’s artwork, a cute picture of him, a utility knife, and a glue stick. That’s it!
Both pieces of artwork were made on card stock using this Do-A-Dot Rainbow Art Set. The Do-A-Dot set is great. My son is 10 months old and he can do it all by himself. It’s less messy than painting, yet still creates great masterpieces! We used Do-A-Dots, but really any artwork will do.
*Toddler Tip: Tape all four edges of the paper to the table with a little painters tape. It makes this project much easier when there is not paper to crumple, rip or eat 🙂

Fold both of the pieces of paper in half. Keep one piece with the artwork on the outside, and one piece with the artwork on the inside. Next, mark and cut using an exacto knife, four small slits on the “inside” piece of artwork, one for each of the corners of the photo.

Then, place the photo’s corners in the slots that you have created.

Now, place the pieces of cardstock ‘white sides together.’ Using a glue stick, glue one half of the paper, and press evenly until the paper is smooth. Do it again on the other side of the card.

Put the card inside something heavy, such as a big book to help the card dry flat. It’s that easy! When the glue is dry, you can add any embellishments that you want. I wrote, ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ on the front of the card and Micah helped me add a couple foam flower stickers.

Happy early Mother’s Day to all you Mamas out there!

Two Months To A 10K: Update

You may have read a few weeks ago that I am training to run my first 10K!  I am also blogging periodically throughout the process. Well, after 3 1/2 weeks of training, things are looking good! I am up to 3 1/2 miles, which I can run comfortably at around a 9 minute pace. A month ago my lungs could not take longer than a mile. It feels good to have endurance again!

One of the main contributors to my success has been scheduling my workouts. I’ve always heard about people doing this, but I never thought it would make that big of a difference. Well, so far, it has! Every single workout until race day is already written on my calender. This helps in a few ways:

  • Writing something down makes me more likely to do it.
  • Each day I know exactly what my workout is, which leaves more room for focus and less room for excuses.
  • Instead of running whatever distance I feel like running, I run the number of miles my calender tells me to.

Here is a copy of my training plan. It is a great training plan. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get in shape and build endurance!

Friday Favorites- 4/27

It’s that time of the week again, Friday is here!
There is just something calming, yet exciting knowing it’s the weekend. It makes me feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve. However, instead of the anticipation of opening presents, I am excited for a long, hot shower all to myself. A time without any little munchkins trying to climb in the tub with me 🙂
Don’t get me wrong, my little boy and I have a lot of fun together during the week, but we love it more than anything when Daddy is home to play with us! Yay for Friday! Here are some of my favorite finds from the week. Enjoy!

Fingerpaint Handprint Card

A few weeks ago (well over a month ago already) it was my mom’s and my mother-in-law’s birthday. Their birthdays even happen to be on the same day! I wanted to make something special for each of them with my 8 month old son. Art, however, can be tricky with a baby. This craft is a little messy, but well worth it!

To make this fun and colorful card, start with painters tape. I like the green frog tape the best. I have found that masking tape is too sticky and will take off part of the card stock when you take the tape off. Stick a few rows of tape together and trace and cut out your pattern. I used my son’s hand-print, but you could use other patterns too.

Next, place it on the card stock.

Then, let your child add some color! (Toddler tip: If your child still likes to put everything in their mouth, have them suck on a pacifier while they paint)

Then, when the paint is dry, peel off the tape and decorate as you wish.

The nice thing about this craft is that the possibilities are endless! Here’s the inside of the card Micah made for my Mom. This would be great for Mother’s Day!

Happy Micah. Happy Grandma. Happy Mama. Mission accomplished!

Two Months To A 10K

I don’t know what came over me, but I signed up to run my first 10K in June. I just finished my first week of training and so far it’s going well! I’ve been a lot faster than I thought I would (as I ran a 7:44 mile tonight), which gives me hope (I mean confidence) that I will be able to finish. Here is a copy of my training plan. I’ll be sharing my thoughts and experiences in the coming weeks.

Friday Favorites- 4/6

It’s Friday, and it’s a good one (pun intended).
I know there have been a lot of Easter crafts and activities in my Friday Favorites lately, but I’ve been looking forward to Easter more than usual this year. I think it is because it is my son’s first Easter celebration. While it has been great fun picking out fun Easter basket presents, even more than that, it is an honor to be able to show and teach him the great, deep, unconditional love of his Savior.
Anyway, here are a few cool things I have found on the web this week!
Fresh lemonade that is perfect for summer.
